Safety Precautions, Tools, and Accessories

Tree removal by yourself for freeWe hope it is unnecessary to explain why felling trees requires a special approach to ensuring the safety of workers. You should have a clear idea of the threats to life, property, and surrounding objects that are caused by uncontrolled falling of cut branches and the tree itself. Also, know the dangers associated with working at height.

We will give some safety recommendations as we describe the felling technology, so these requirements must be met even before you pick up a chainsaw.

First, solve the insurance issue. If there is no special insurance available, tie it yourself:
  1. Fold the rope of about 2.5 meters in half.
  2. Pass it between your legs with a loopback.
  3. In front of the belt, tie a knot-eight.
  4. Wrap the free ends around the torso, passing each in a loop at the back.
  5. Tighten the ends and tie them in front over the eight.

The Scheme of the Figure-Eight knot for Securing the Carabiner or Rope

The loop in the front hooks the carbine fastened to a safety line wrapped twice around the tree trunk. At the ends of the slings should be tied knots “eight” or Prusik loop. You can throw it in any place, but it is better if a massive branch or branch is located just below. Keep in mind that wrapping a loop around your waist is not the best idea, as there is a high risk of injury to your ribs and spine if you fall.
The Scheme of the Figure-EightWhen pruning the crown and felling, it is necessary to clear the escape routes in advance. An assistant must control the fall of each cut branch using a tied rope, but no one is immune from the fact that the branch suddenly changes its trajectory.

Do not use a ladder. To fix yourself at a height, wrap the second sling twice around the trunk and pass your feet through the loops at its ends. Work is allowed only in closed clothing, glasses, and gloves. A hard hat must protect the head. Except for the chainsaw, also store about a hundred meters of sturdy rope for the guy ropes and keep a light hook at hand in case the branches clash.

Assessment of the Work Front, Crown Pruning

The major problem with felling trees is that it is impossible to predict how the crown mass is distributed. You cannot predict the trajectory of the fall, even if you cut the trunk correctly. To facilitate the process, do it in the spring or late autumn when the crown is very rare. The weather should be dry, and the tree should not be slippery after recent rain.

First, install the ladder and cut off all the lower branches within reach. The stepladder should be installed in such a way that the tree trunk is between it and the cut branch. The most convenient position, including when working without a ladder is when you hold the chainsaw with both hands while hugging the trunk.

Crown PruningKeep pruning the crown in sequence from the bottom up, so that the cut branches fall free and do not get tangled in the lower ones that have not yet been removed. You should tie the rope for which the assistant helps to control the fall 1-1. 5 meters from the trunk. Branches need to be cut so that there are branches of 30-40 cm long, which you can throw into safety slings or lean on your feet.
When the height of the stepladder is not enough, throw a foot sling on the most convenient branch or wrap around the trunk at the desired height, and then rest your feet in the loops. Locate it in a way that the sawing is at chest level or lower. By hugging the tree with one hand, double wrap the second sling (or chain) to secure the belt, connect the loops with a carabiner and tighten the clutch on it.

The second helpful position is to turn your back to the trunk and stand with your feet on the branch being cut while cutting it off half a meter in front of you. Before you cut, adjust the length and height of the slings for greater convenience and make sure you have enough room to maneuver. After this, you can lift the chainsaw from the ground by a rope tied to the handle, while the binding location should be selected as far away from the tool controls as possible.

What to Do First: Roll or Trim?

The trees rarely require pruning or felling. You should cut the tree if, for example, gas pipes or power lines are near the crown. As we have already said, the primary purpose of pruning is to balance the tree, so it is unnecessary to trim the branches from the side where the blockage is planned.

The height of the tree is no less important. The trunk must be shortened if you can’t clear a section of the desired length under a tree. Before doing this, cut all the lower tiers of branches, occasionally you even have to cut branches from the side of the blockage. Sometimes the crown intertwines.

Neighboring trees often interfere while working in the garden and green spaces. If it is not dead wood, it is not advisable to touch them. It is much better to cut the branches in parts, starting with the one farthest from the trunk, which can be reached. Even if tiny fragments of branches get stuck in their own or neighboring crown, the assistant will pull them down and to the side.

You can say that you should start felling only if:
  • The tree after processing its appearance clarifies that it will fall exactly as you need.
  • The height of the tree is 30-50% less than the length of the cleared area, similar to the width of the crown.
  • Nearby, there are other trees or stationary objects that can be attached to the guy ropes to guide the trunk when it falls.

How to Trim the Trunk?

Now you can go to the simplest part of the process and bring down the cleared trunk.

The principal task is to cut correctly.

Trimming the Trunk
From the side where you plan to cut down the tree, perform a chainsaw oblique cut from top to bottom on a third of the trunk’s diameter at an angle of 60°, as shown in the figure. Next, from the lower part, we make an incision straight or at an angle of 30° so that the result is a wedge. The tree will fall in the direction perpendicular to the bend line after knocking out the wedge, so it is desirable to make the joint of both saws as smooth as possible.

On the reverse side, we step up from the plane of the lower incision by 2/3 of the diameter of the trunk or more. We saw obliquely and downwards, directing the incision to the inner corner of the wedge-shaped cutting. As you get closer to the center, you will hear a distinctive crack, and the tree will list. Swiftly remove the saw from the expanding incision and move aside from the tree for five meters.

You need not tie any ropes and pull them, the trunk will fall by itself. Remember: nobody must stand in fell's direction. However, do not forget that it is still worth bracing the tree.

Sawing the Trunk and Uprooting the Stump

The only thing left is to clean up after work. You can’t leave the shrub and stump cut down as it is. First, cut off all the remaining branches with ones at their very base. Cut the forks across to remove both diverging parts with a single cut. Based on what tree you felled and how you aim to use the wood, cut the trunk into pieces using the available method of transportation.

The remaining stump is too tedious to root without help. By using a 16-20 mm wood drill, drill vertical holes in the trunk's section so deep that they go below ground level by 15-20 cm. Drill in staggered order with an interval of 5-7 cm. With a funnel and ramrod, fill the holes with ammonium nitrate to the top, cover the top with a piece of roofing material. By the next season, the stump will turn to dust, and you can remove its leftovers.
